125 years WIU tomorrow

A Letter from the President

As we celebrate the 125th anniversary of Western Illinois University, I am filled with a deep sense of pride and gratitude. From our beginnings as a teachers’ college, WIU has evolved over the course of 125 years into a comprehensive university that serves a diverse student population, and offers programs that meet the needs of our region. Today, our University’s priorities center on aligning with student interests and regional workforce needs, on expanding educational access to first generation, traditionally underrepresented, and new markets of adult and online learners; and toward ensuring a dynamic, inclusive, welcoming campus communities in Macomb, the Quad Cities, and Online that promote every student’s ability to thrive. This milestone is a testament to the commitment of our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and supporters who have shaped our legacy over the years.

Our history is rich with stories of resilience, excellence, and transformation. I encourage you to tour the 125th Founders’ Day Exhibit in the Garden Lounge on the 2nd floor of the Malpass Library here on campus. See how WIU has weathered challenges and celebrated triumphs, guided by our mission to provide an inclusive and transformative educational experience.

The exhibit celebrates the contributions of Professor John Hallwas, whose work as a historian and author has been instrumental in preserving the stories of our region. His dedication to documenting the heritage of Western Illinois has not only enriched our understanding of the past but also strengthened the cultural fabric of our community.

Learn more about the legacy of Col. Rock Hanson, a true symbol of leadership and integrity at WIU. His commitment to excellence, both on the field and off, left an indelible mark on the university, shaping the lives of countless students and setting a standard of dedication that continues to inspire us all.

This amazing exhibit rich in our history will be available to the public as of Oct. 18, 2024 and will remain in place for the academic year. As we look back on 125 years of accomplishments, it is also important to look ahead to the future. The needs of our students and communities are changing, and so we must evolve and change with those needs.

May our connection to the past and to our Founders’ vision serve as inspiration, and remind all of us that today’s creative ideas, innovation, and future plans are the building blocks for the next generations of WIU as we celebrate this Founders’ Day and the 125th anniversary of Western Illinois University.

Thank you, for choosing to be a Leatherneck as we honor the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to the future. Together, we are Leatherneck strong.
