Western Places Second Most Athletes on Commisioner's List
Western Illinois placed 129 athletes on The Summit League's 2007-08 Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence, ranking it second amongst the 10 league schools.
The 2007-08 Summit League Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence is comprised of a total of 995 student-athletes from all 19 league-sponsored sports who have been honored for their academic prowess.

Westerwinds' 2008 Recruiting Class Labeled as Top in Conference
Women's soccer head coach Tony Guinn's first recruiting class at Western Illinois has already earned national recognition, being named the top recruiting class in The Summit League by Soccer Buzz Magazine.
"It's a honor to receive recognition for the work that is unseen,” stated Guinn. “70 percent of the success that takes place in college soccer comes from recruiting. It's a great credit to the hard work the coaches put in behind the scenes to have my first recruiting class receive the top ranking in the league.”

Western Takes Second in Commissioner's Cup
Western Illinois used three first place and one second place regular season finishes to lead it to a second-place finish in the Commisioner's Cup.
The Leathernecks used first place finishes from the tennis and golf teams to finish second in the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men's All Sports Award. The Westerwinds were paced to a third-place finish for the Dr. Helen Smiley Women's All Sports Award by the soccer team's regular season conference championship and the second-place finish by the swimming and diving team.

Western Places 110 Athletes on Winter-Spring Academic All-League Teams
Western Illinois placed 110 athletes on The Summit League's winter-spring academic all-league teams, the third highest amount of all Summit League teams.
A total of 989 student-athletes from the sports of baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's track & field were honored for their academic excellence.

Gateway Football Conference Changes Its Name
Presidents of the nine-member Gateway Football Conference and the 10-member Missouri Valley Conference have approved a rebranding initiative that changes the football conference name from the Gateway Football Conference to the Missouri Valley Football Conference. The change is effective immediately.
It represents the second name change for the football league, which begins its 24th season this fall. Initially, the conference competed under the Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference (1985-91) and the Gateway Football Conference (1992-2007).
