Public Art Policy
General Statement of Policy and Scope
Properly installing, displaying, and maintaining public art at Western Illinois University is important to the long term success of the University. To this end, each campus (Macomb and Quad Cities) will develop and enforce Public Art Guidelines.
The art committees on each campus will exclusively review and approve proposed requests, purchases, donations, bequests and commissions for all public art. The art committees will generate and maintain Public Art Guidelines to be followed by the campus community.
This policy, guides the review, acceptance, documentation, and maintenance of works of art displayed in university buildings, and on university grounds at Western Illinois University (WIU). This document covers the following types of works:
- Murals created by professional artists, which are intended for display in public areas of campus buildings (lobby, auditorium, etc.), or on building exteriors or other outdoor items (fencing, transformers, etc);
- Sculptures and site-specific installations created by professional artists, which are intended for display in public areas of campus buildings (lobby, auditorium, etc.), or on campus grounds;
- Functional art objects (e.g., bike rack) designed by professional artists, which are intended to be used on campus.
Once an item is approved by a committee, final determination will be made by the President and Leadership Team.
