MACOMB, IL - - Meet Chavez Archibald, A Western Illinois University Public Health graduate, who has been hired as an environmental health sanitarian by the McDonough County Health Department (MCHD) in Macomb.

"MCHD plays a vital role in ensuring environmental health, disease prevention and health education for residents of McDonough County," Archibald said.

Archibald initially completed an internship at MCHD and that experience inspired him to apply for a vacant position.

"The interview process was definitely a bit nerve-wracking, but I was able to calm my nerves by reminding myself how comfortable and welcomed I felt during my internship," Archibald said. "Having firsthand experience with the department's work gave me a solid foundation to discuss my qualifications and how I could contribute in a full-time role. Ultimately, my internship experience not only helped me build valuable skills but also opened the door to this incredible career opportunity."

WIU provided Archibald with the necessary tools to succeed in a public health career. Not only does he lean on the academic foundation he received, but he also credits WIU with equipping him with essential soft skills and expertise to fulfill his role.

"During my time at WIU, I gained a strong foundation in public health principles, environmental health and disease prevention. My coursework provided me with valuable knowledge in epidemiology, sanitation, food safety and environmental hazard mitigation, which directly applies to my role," Archibald said. "Beyond academics, WIU helped me develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills essential when conducting inspections, investigating complaints and educating the public on health and safety regulations. My major in public health prepared me well for this career by equipping me with the necessary expertise to assess and address environmental health risks, ensuring the well-being of the community."

As an alumnus, Archibald plans to stay connected to the WIU community and support the events and initiatives around campus.

"I will stay involved at WIU by staying connected with university updates, attending alumni events and giving back through volunteering, mentorship and professional networking opportunities," Archibald said. "I also look forward to supporting WIU initiatives that enhance student experiences and contribute to the university's continued success."
