WIU Alumnus John Meixner Honored as Educator of Excellence

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University alumnus John Meixner, regional superintendent of schools, has been recognized as an Educator of Excellence at the Illinois Coalition for Educators of At-Risk Youth (ICEARY) Conference in Bloomington. This prestigious honor highlights his dedication to serving at-risk youth and his impact on alternative education in the state.

Meixner, who earned his bachelor of science degree in Kinesiology in 1995 and his master's of education in Educational Leadership in 2005 from WIU, has been a steadfast advocate for students facing barriers to success. His career has been marked by a commitment to creating inclusive learning environments, developing innovative teaching strategies and advancing service and advocacy for at-risk students at multiple levels, from local classrooms to state initiatives.

The ICEARY Conference brings together approximately 800 alternative educators from across Illinois to share best practices and celebrate outstanding contributions to the field. Meixner was awarded the ICEARY Region 3 Educator of Excellence Award during a reception and recognition program held on March 7.

Nominees for this honor are recognized for their leadership in:


  • Building relationships and fostering a sense of belonging for at-risk youth and their families.

  • Developing active learning strategies that help students find creative ways to overcome challenges and achieve success.

  • Advocating for at-risk students at the school, district, regional and state levels.


Meixner's passion for education and student success was cultivated at WIU, where he laid the foundation for his career in educational leadership. His recognition as an Educator of Excellence reflects the values and dedication that WIU instills in its graduates.

WIU congratulates Meixner on this well-deserved honor and celebrates his ongoing commitment to making a difference in the lives of students across Illinois.
