January 15, 2025
Editor's Note: This is a series of stories about Western Illinois University students, alumni and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.
MACOMB, IL - - Maria Godina, a 2023 Western Illinois University graduate, is not only grateful for the education and personal growth she found during her time on campus, but also for the life experiences she had as a Leatherneck.
"I also think of the friendships I've made, the valuable lessons learned both inside and outside the classroom, and the preparation for future careers," Godina said. "Ultimately, thinking about WIU makes me think of a mix of academic success, community involvement and the development of lifelong skills and relationships."
Godina, a graduate of WIU's Social Work program, went on to earn her master's degree from Aurora University and now works at North Central Behavioral Health as a mental health therapist. She believes WIU laid the groundwork for her career success.
"I can confidently say it laid a solid foundation for my career as a social worker," Godina said "The comprehensive curriculum combined theoretical knowledge with practical skills, preparing me for the complexities of this field. WIU's emphasis on experiential learning through internships and community service projects was invaluable. These experiences allowed me to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings, honing my skills in communication, empathy and problem-solving."
Godina encourages students deciding to pursue higher education to visit WIU and explore everything it has to offer.
"When considering WIU, it's important to visit the campus, research programs and majors, explore facilities and support services, understand costs and financial aid options, speak with current students and alumni, consider the university's location and get involved in campus activities for a better college experience."
As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite WIU students, alumni, faculty and staff to share their stories and be featured in our series by filling out this form, or contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
