MACOMB/MOLINE, IL - - Leonita Bekteshi has found a place to grow at Western Illinois University. The senior economics major said being at WIU has given her a chance to be involved in a multitude of organizations including the National Multicultural Greek Council (NMGZ).
"A favorite Leatherneck memory for many could be being part of NMGZ," Bekteshi said. "It's a chance to connect with others, build lifelong friendships and be part of a supportive community that embodies the spirit of pride and unity at WIU."
Through her involvement, Bekteshi said she has learned a lot about herself and the community around her, using her Leatherneck perseverance to get everything she can out of her time at WIU.
"A Leatherneck is someone who represents strength, pride and resilience," Bekteshi said. "It's not just about being tough—it's about facing challenges head-on and never giving up. The term brings people at WIU together, creating a sense of unity and determination. It's a symbol of the shared spirit and camaraderie that connects everyone in the WIU family."
Bekteshi plans to graduate from WIU in the spring and use her education to move to Chicago and pursue a career in digital marketing.
"WIU has given me a strong foundation in communication, data analysis and creative strategy, all of which are key in this field," Bekteshi said.
Bekteshi said students should "go for it" when considering WIU and take advantage of all the campus has to offer.
"Get involved in campus life — there are so many opportunities to learn, grow and meet new people," Bekteshi said. "The professors are supportive and the community is tight-knit, so don't be afraid to ask for help or make connections. My advice? Make the most of your time here, try new things and build relationships that'll last beyond graduation."
