Editor's Note: This is the next in a series of stories about Western Illinois University students, alumni, and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.

MACOMB, IL - - Thinking back on his time at Western Illinois University, 1993 graduate Thomas Trias said the "phenomenal education" he received as a student helped propel him to a career as a software engineer.

"I think about the phenomenal education at WIU," Trias said. "To me, a Leatherneck is someone who perseveres and triumphs."

Trias was involved in multiple activities on campus, including working closely with his professors to further his education.

"In addition to frequenting the math and computer science departments, I was active in WESTECH technical theater, and presented papers on behalf of my professors," Trias said.

He said students need a way to harness their future, and the faculty at WIU will do just that.

"If you make the effort, the faculty will help you reach your full potential," Trias said.

As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite WIU students, alumni, faculty and staff to share their stories and be featured in our series by filling out this form, or contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
