Editor's Note: This is a series of stories about Western Illinois University students, alumni, and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.

MACOMB, IL - - Between the community, smaller class sizes and staying close to home, choosing Western Illinois University was an easy decision for Hannah Eden.

"I liked that it was close to home and I had friends joining me at WIU," Eden, a senior Chemistry major at WIU, said. "I love the smaller classes and community. I have gotten to know so many new students and professors."

Eden's adventures in the WIU chemistry department have shaped her education, giving her experiences she wouldn't have at other institutions.

"I have had the opportunity to get hands-on experience in a lab and working with professors in the chemistry department," Eden said.

Coming from nearby Bushell, Eden said staying close to home has been extremely helpful. She has been able to be close to family and maintain local friendships, but also expand her horizons in Macomb with people from all around.

"Make sure to get involved and meet new people," Eden said. "It is nice having your high school friends close by, but it is so exciting to meet new people who you can connect with in different ways."

As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite WIU students, alumni, faculty and staff to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
