WIU Housing & Dining to Launch to Pilot Program to Combat Food Insecurities on Campus
November 14, 2024
MACOMB, IL— Western Illinois University Housing and Dining Services is unveiling a new pilot program to combat food insecurities on campus. In conjunction with the Western Illinois University Food Pantry, UHDS is proud to partner with Swipe Out Hunger, a national nonprofit organization powering the movement to end college student hunger.
Swipe Out Hunger collaborates with colleges, legislators and the greater community to address student food insecurity by championing hunger solutions. Since 2010, Swipe Out Hunger has enabled 12.3 million meals across more than 800 campuses throughout North America.
Students can donate their extra meal plan dollars to a "bank" that will allow other students who have run out of meal plan dollars to utilize their donated amount.
Students can donate any amount over the suggested weekly meal plan balance (see Balance Card) for the semester by simply emailing UHDS@wiu.edu. A housing representative will inform them of how much they can donate and from there all they need to do is confirm.
Additionally, a dedicated foundation account was established with assistance from Sodexo Campus Services, who provided the first $2,500. Individuals interested in donating monetarily to this cause can do so by clicking here and selecting "Hunger Free Campus Initiative" under the "Student Life" option.
"UHDS would like to thank the WIU food pantry, specifically Dr. Emily Shupe, for helping to bring this program to our campus, and Sodexo Campus Services for providing the initial funding to establish the account for future food-related needs. We are thrilled to be able to offer this program at WIU," said WIU Director of Housing and Dining Services, Bridget McCormick.
