Editor's Note: This is a series of stories about Western Illinois University students, alumni, and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.
MACOMB, IL - - For local student Elygah Lyons, Western Illinois University gave her the chance to stay close to family while getting a high-quality education.
"I decided to stay close to home because of my family; I enjoy being with them as much as possible," Lyons said. "My overall experience has been amazing."
Lyons is originally from a nearby Industry and studies exercise science at WIU. The structure and support she is able to receive from everyone on campus have made her time at WIU worthwhile.
"The knowledgeable professors and other workers on campus are very willing to listen and help — you can tell they love what they do," Lyons said. "I've learned a lot through the classes and feel knowledgeable enough to be prepared to go into my field upon graduation. I think Western has helped prepare me for my future through all the hands-on experience. It gives me a real feel for what I'll be doing after I graduate."
When talking to other students who are considering their options after high school, she encourages them to consider WIU, not only for the education but for the local community and people.
"Western and Macomb are great because you have so many resources and people who are excited to help even in a small community," Lyons said. "If Western has the degree you're looking for and you aren't quite ready to explore the outside world or you have priorities that are keeping you here it's an excellent choice."
As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite WIU students, alumni, faculty and staff to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
