November 6, 2024
Editor's Note: This is the first in a series of stories about Western Illinois University students, alumni, and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.
MACOMB/MOLINE, IL – Alumna Ashley Allen Smith chose WIU because of the community she felt.
"When I think of WIU, I think about the excellent instructors who are dedicated to student success, the intimate class sizes that foster personalized teaching, and the tight-knit friendships I built during my time there. Those experiences made my education truly memorable and meaningful," Smith said.
To Smith, being a Leatherneck means to wear a badge of honor.
"This honor represents my commitment to education and my dedication to my local community. Attending WIU-QC allowed me to pursue my degree while keeping my roots planted in my community. I value the affordable education I received and the opportunities it has provided," Smith said.
Her favorite memory at WIU was studying under Professor Lance Brendan Young.
"He was an outstanding instructor who brought immense value to WIU-QC. His expertise and engaging teaching style left a lasting impression on me, and I still use the research strategies he taught," Smith said.
Smith stays involved with the Community Engagement Manager for the City of Moline.
"I came into the Communication program with a passion for Public Relations, and WIU helped me turn that passion into reality. The program allowed me to get involved and start building connections while still in school, so I never felt like I was waiting for my life to begin after graduation," Smith said.
Smith advises students to consider WIU-QC to explore an educational path like no other.
"Don't underestimate the value of connecting with your advisor - Kenny Wheeler was an invaluable resource for me. The smaller campus fosters personalized support from staff who genuinely care about your success. Choosing WIU is a smart and rewarding investment in your future," Smith said.
As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local WIU students to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
