WIU Honors Military and Veterans with November Events

MACOMB, IL - - The Western Illinois University Veterans Resource Center is spending early November honoring those who are currently serving, have served or support those in the military.

Military Appreciation Week will span Nov. 2-11, kicking off with The Fallen Soldiers 5k Run/Walk.

The event will be held at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 2. Registration for the race is $10 for WIU students and $35 for others.

The events will continue 10:45 a.m. - 1 p.m., Monday, Nov. 4, with Kinder Monday, an opportunity to sign cards for deployed students. The Kinder Monday event will be held behind Stipes Hall.

On Tuesday, Nov. 5, "Battle of the Branches," an all-day bench press competition, will be held. It is an open format for current service members, veterans or ROTC. Those participating can come anytime to the Campus Rec Center.

From 3:30 - 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 6 there will be a care package preparation event held at the Alumni House.

The Military Appreciation Club will hold a panel for attendees to hear about military service students' experiences from 3-4 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 7 in the University Union Fox Room. Following the event, the All-Star Tug-of-War will be held between 5-7 p.m. in the Campus Rec Center. Registration for the Tug-of-War competition can be found here.

At 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 9, WIU football is offering four free tickets per person to veterans or service members during the Protect & Serve Day game against Tennessee State. To claim tickets, call 309-298-1190 or email jc-miller3@wiu.edu on or before Monday, Nov. 4.

The events will conclude on Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11. Flags of Love will be setting up the flags at 7 a.m. and taking them down at 5 p.m. in Chandler Park.

The week will conclude on Veterans Day with a Military Tribute Ceremony on the south side of Hanson Field from 11 a.m..-12 p.m. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be held in the Heritage Room in the University Union.
