Editor's Note: This is the next in a series of stories about Western Illinois University students, alumni and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.

MACOMB, IL - - One of the best lessons Devin Biggs learned during his time at Western Illinois University is how tough Leathernecks are.

"Issues are going to come up," Biggs, a 2017 graduate in Meteorology, said. "It's how people respond to it that matters. We work with what's available to us."

Biggs learned those skills at WIU, where he was able to "grow as a person," spending four years as part of the WIU Marching Leathernecks, the pep band, the Severe Weather Club and the Lutheran Student Fellowship.

He took his education and has moved into broadcast television, where he works as a weekday morning meteorologist for WJFW Newswatch 12 in Rhinelander, WI. Moving from Macomb to Rhinelander was a perfect fit.

"Macomb provided a small-town feel that I absolutely love," Biggs said. "Where I live now also allows me to enjoy the small-town feel."

As a proud alum, Biggs said WIU is a great place for students to learn who they are and try new things. The atmosphere and support around campus are invaluable for any student looking for a strong college experience.

"It's easier to show your personality than trying to be someone you're not," Biggs said. "Also, don't be afraid to ask questions and seek help. I found myself asking classmates, tutors and even teachers for help on harder subjects; especially in my later years at WIU. The library helped to provide a nice quiet place to work. Get involved in activities. It's an easy way to make friends and you have fun too."

As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local WIU students to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
