WIU Office of Public Safety Achieves ILEAP Reaccreditation

MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University Office of Public Safety (OPS) has achieved reaccreditation through the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (ILEAP) as of October 2024. This marks the department's first reaccreditation since its initial accreditation in 2019, showcasing commitment to upholding high standards in law enforcement.

ILEAP, established by the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police (ILACP), is the accreditation authority for law enforcement agencies in Illinois. It helps local departments demonstrate compliance with best practices in administration, operations, personnel and training. The reaccreditation process occurs every four years to ensure departments remain aligned with evolving laws and professional standards.

The WIU OPS met or exceeded 69 key standards in the Tier I accreditation process, placing them among an elite group of only 62 accredited agencies statewide. Professional assessors reviewed critical policies, including those related to the use of force, pursuit procedures, record-keeping and community policing, to confirm the department's compliance with ILEAP standards.

WIU Chief Watts thanks Captain Curt Bilbrey and Officers Tim Harting and Melody Piper for their hard work and commitment to the accreditation program.

WIU OPS has been a central part of campus security since its formation in 1956, growing into a 20-officer department providing 24-hour service. OPS offers a variety of services including routine patrols, security for campus events, traffic control and safety programs for the campus community.
