Editor's Note: This is the next in a series of stories about Western Illinois University students, alumni and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.

MACOMB, IL – Madeline Weiss, a major in Social Work at Western Illinois University, was drawn because of the positive environment.

"I was drawn to Western because of the welcoming environment they have. Every time I stepped on campus I felt like I was being welcomed, regardless if someone knew me or not. I was also drawn to Western because of how close it is to me. My parents met at WIU and decided to stay in Macomb. I have grown up around past Leathernecks so when it was time for me to pick I couldn't wait to come here," Weiss said.

Her experience at WIU has been nothing short of positive.
"My overall experience at WIU has been very positive. Everyone is so nice and helpful, I love the camaraderie between those I see every day," she said.

Weiss feels confident that all are welcome with open arms at WIU.

"Western has prepared me for my future and dream career by showing that I can do it. The department that I am in so welcoming and loving. They are so positive and supportive. I came into the major without knowing anyone or what I wanted to do as a social worker, but now I feel that I have the skills to achieve my dreams," Weiss said.

She encourages prospective students to explore WIU, a place where all belong.

"The advice that I would give to a local student considering WIU is to give it a try. It doesn't hurt to try, and you might fall in love with it. And you would be close to home," Weiss said.

As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local WIU students to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
