Editor's Note: This is the next in a series of stories about Western Illinois University students, alumni, and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.

MACOMB, IL – Brad Utter, a current student in the General Studies program at WIU, is an active member of the WIU Community and proudly works as a carpenter in Facilities Management.

"I have worked here full-time since 2012 and I am finally taking advantage of the higher education work incentive," Utter said.

Utter talks about his experience as an online student, "My classes are all online which is great for me because I work during the day and I have two young sons. I don't have time to attend classes in person. Having the ability to do the coursework at night and on the weekends is so convenient. My professors are straightforward. I get a weekly email from my Leatherneck Success Leader which provides a check-in, helpful hints, and resources available to me," Utter said.

Utter said WIU is a place for everyone.

"Western is friendly, accessible and convenient. It is never too late to start your journey towards a degree," Utter concluded.

As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local WIU students to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
