MACOMB/MOLINE, IL - - Western Illinois University's Kappa Sigma Chapter has earned the 2023-2024 National Phi Alpha Chapter Service Award, recognizing the chapter's outstanding service and commitment to the community. As a result of this achievement, the chapter has been invited to present a poster presentation on their service activities at the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Annual Program Meeting (APM) in Kansas City, MO, on Oct. 25.

In addition to this honor, the chapter will receive $1,000 towards travel expenses, a $500 check and a plaque.

The WIU Kappa Sigma Chapter participated in numerous service activities throughout the 2023-2024 academic year, demonstrating their dedication to social work values and community engagement. Among their key initiatives:

Supply Drive for The Samaritan Well, Inc. Transitional Living Shelter: Chapter members worked to raise awareness about housing insecurity and collected essential items for the shelter. Collection boxes were placed in two campus academic buildings, and a drive was held outside a local Walmart, where flyers were distributed to encourage donations.

Support for Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS): The chapter raised awareness about the importance of mentoring through BBBS and fundraised for the local BBBS program. In collaboration with the Social Work Student Association (SWSA) and Golden Motion, the chapter formed teams for the BBBS Bowl for Kids Sake fundraiser and participated in a BBBS Music Trivia event.

Phi Alpha Week: During March, to celebrate Social Work Month, the chapter hosted events, including a Soda Bar & Study Tables event, a Bowling Night, and a Movie Night, open to all social work students, to foster connections and promote Phi Alpha.

Supporting Other Social Work Student Organizations: The chapter supported campus events organized by the Social Work Student Diversity Council, including the Self-Care Event, Horn Field Campus Event and the PinWheels Event for Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Ice Cream & Senior Panel: To connect social work students of all levels, the chapter hosted an Ice Cream & Senior Panel event, where senior social work students shared insights and advice with younger students.

Study Table Events: The chapter hosted two Study Table events, offering snacks and a quiet space for students to study. Phi Alpha members were available to assist with assignments, test preparation and general academic questions.
