125 Anniversary Celebration: Madison Calvert

Editor's Note: This is the next in a series of stories about Western Illinois University students, alumni, and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.

MACOMB, IL - - The small-town atmosphere of Macomb led Madison Calvert to choose WIU.

Calvert, who majors in Agriculture (Ag) Business with a minor in Communications, said she has found her experience at WIU welcoming.

"I am mostly in Knoblauch Hall and you truly do not know a stranger in that building," Calvert said.

She said that the feeling of family isn't just found in the WIU students and the faculty.

"Professors here are not only concerned about your grades, but about helping you become the best version of yourself," she said. "They constantly seek to get you out of your comfort zone and network because they care about you."

Calvert is originally from nearby Sciota and said local students should take advantage of the great education and value located right in their backyard.

"Advice I would give to a local student considering WIU is to think about what they value," Calvert said. "If you value good relationships with the faculty and an inviting community, Western is the place for you."
