Community Art Program Accepting Registrations

MACOMB, IL - - The fall sessions of the Western Illinois University Art Education Community Art Program will be held through the first three Sundays of November.

These free-of-charge sessions will be held from 1-2:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 3, 10 and 17. Classes for third and fourth graders will be in Garwood Hall, room 24 and classes for fifth through eighth graders in Garwood Hall, room 25. Both classes have a 15 student capacity.

The third and fourth-grade classes will take part in a series of lessons that touch on a variety of artistic techniques with the theme of space. Students will create a mixed-media piece within the unit that utilizes watercolor, drawing and collage. The project builds off a silhouetted watercolor planet as their background; for the second lesson, students will draw and decorate a floating astronaut and on the final day, students will create a spaceship that their astronaut is tethered to.

The fifth through eighth graders will explore 3-D techniques by building a relief sculpture of a fish. The students will begin with an introduction to fish represented in different cultures and aesthetics, then design and build the skeleton out of cardboard. From there, students will layer the exterior of their fish with newspaper and plaster gauze to create interesting textures. On the final day, students will bring their fish to life by decorating the surfaces with paint, patterns and various materials.
