Editor's Note: This is the next in a series of stories about Western Illinois University students, alumni, and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.

MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University has always been a part of senior Karol Sheese's family. Her parents are alumni and her grandparents met at WIU, and that thought is not lost on her as she continues her journey in Macomb.

"To be at Western is to be where they learned, know the paths they took, be in the stories they've told me," Sheese said.

Her experience in the music program has also been invigorating, as she builds her own memories at WIU.

"My classes are my social club," Sheese said. "My classmates are who I miss over the breaks. They're familiar, they're comforting to be around. Every new year feels like a reunion."

Her favorite example of just how strong the feeling of family is at WIU comes from a time when a fire alarm brought friends and students together.

"We ended up organizing a large impromptu sleepover in my dorm. We used every blanket and pillow I owned," Sheese said. "I'll never forget how strongly our sense of school was, nor will I forget how much I loved having them all there."

Although Sheese has spent her time as a music major, she said anyone can find family at WIU, no matter what they are interested in studying.

"Find the fun," she said. "We're here because we wanted to be, because we showed up and put the work in. Make it fun. Be the person that helps others find their fun, too. Show up for you and Western will, too."

As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local WIU students to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
