MACOMB, IL - - As a double major, Western Illinois University senior Connor Lukkarinen said the resources available at WIU make his journey easier as he completes his degree.

"Western's foreign language program has vast resources, which allow me to be a double-major without worrying about falling through the cracks or taking out a student loan," Lukkarinen, a Spanish language and Psychology major, said. "I also liked how WIU had Division 1 athletic programs and a wide range of extracurricular activities that accommodate various interests. Lastly, I liked how the campus was easily walkable and close-knit."

Lukkarinen noted the strong foreign language classes available at WIU, crediting his ability to perfect his understanding of the language to his professors and the study abroad program.

"I got the opportunity to study abroad in Spain for a month in the summer, which exposed me to a different kind of culture and strengthened my interest in continuing the study and practice of the language," Lukkarinen said.

The psychology program showed him all aspects of the field as well, allowing him to explore all specialties should he decide to move on to graduate school.

"The psychology club has also helped me by bringing in professors and other experts of the field to talk about their respective areas of study and what graduate school looks like," Lukkarinen said.

Lukkarinen is originally from Macomb and suggests other local students check out WIU before looking elsewhere.

"I would recommend all local students truly look into Western," he said. "I would encourage local students to do their research as to why Western is so often talked about. There are a multitude of programs, renowned faculty, immense academic and financial resources, and perhaps most importantly: WIU wants local students to attend. College is about finding the right fit for you and I think Western has a lot to offer for local students to create the college experience they desire."

As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local WIU students to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
