MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University will celebrate the International Day of Peace at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, in the University Union Lamoine Room. The International Day of Peace, also known as Peace Day, is observed worldwide each year in September.

Established in 1981 by a unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date to commit to peace above all differences and to contribute to building a culture of peace.

WIU celebrates Peace Day every year and for the second time, the WIU 2024 Peace Award will be given this year to someone who exemplifies the ideals of peace and social justice on our campus during the International Day of Peace celebration. In 2023, the event obtained the Outstanding Collaborative Program Award at the Office of Student Engagement's Leadership Awards ceremony.

This year's Peace Day celebration is sponsored by the WIU Department of Political Science, the WIU College of Arts and Sciences, AMPLIFY, the Latin American Student Organization, Alpha Psi Lambda National, Inc., Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity, Inc. and the NAACP.

This year's theme is "Cultivating a Culture of Peace." Students decided to discuss the perpetuation of racism and its possible solutions and the end of Affirmative Action and its impact. A couple of the organizers will then engage the audience in art for advocacy and activism.

"The students have prepared fun activities to discuss serious topics. Please join us," Political Science Professor Julia Albarracín said.
