Editor's Note: This is the next in a series of stories about Western Illinois University students, alumni, and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.

MACOMB, IL - - As a local student, Western Illinois University graduate Allison Wetzel knew about the small, tight-knit community that makes WIU special, but being a part of that atmosphere exceeded her expectations.

"My overall experience at WIU has been great," Wetzel said, who earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications in Spring 2024. "I have met so many great people and have worked with many wonderful professors who truly care about helping every student."

The faculty and staff at WIU equipped Wetzel with all the necessary skills and experience for her future career in the communications field.

She said WIU is a great place for students to find themselves and try things that may be outside their comfort zone.

"I discovered what I truly wanted to do by taking classes that intimidated and pushed me. I changed my major to communications after taking a communications class even though I was scared to and I have not regretted my decision once, as I am truly doing what I love."

As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local WIU students to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
