Just Hired! Through the experiences of local, regional, national and international students, Western Illinois University has some incredible alumni who are changing the world in the workforce. This series will feature students from all over the world who are hired post-graduation.

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL - - Meet Christopher Reyes, a Spring 2024 graduate in Emergency Management, who recently accepted a position with Northwestern Medicine as an Emergency Management Specialist.

"Some of my new responsibilities will revolve around project management; revising, maintaining and updating operation plans, serving on committees, leading drills and exercises and much more," Reyes said.

Reyes feels his experience started when a fellow Leatherneck gave him a lead after working with them at an internship with the Red Cross.

"From there, I had to first apply for the position with my resume and my cover letter. After being selected, I went through three rounds of interviews before I was ultimately offered the position." Reyes said.

Reyes feels WIU prepared him for this position by making internships mandatory through the program.

"The mandatory internship at WIU proved to be greatly beneficial as the connections I made proved to be the deciding factor when getting this job. Not to mention my involvement at WIU with IESMA and the apprenticeship meetings hosted by Professor Johnson equipped me with the necessary skills to stand out from the rest of the competition, " Reyes said.

Reyes plans to stay involved with the WIU Alumni Association and would love to come back and speak to students interested in emergency management and be a spokesperson for the program.
