Editor's Note: This is the next in a series of stories about Western Illinois University students, alumni, and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.

MACOMB, IL - - Being a Leatherneck is about strength, resilience and being a part of a supportive community, said Western Illinois University student Akhila Gampa.

"It represents pride in overcoming challenges, staying committed to growth and always striving for excellence," said Gampa, who is working toward his Master of Science degree in Applied Statistics and Decision Analytics. It's about teamwork, building lasting connections and embracing every opportunity to learn and make a difference."

Gampa's favorite memories as a student so far have been embracing life on campus and participating in the many celebrations and events WIU has to offer.

"My favorite Leatherneck memory is participating in Flor de Cultura during the spring," Gampa said. "I also had an incredible time at the campus block party and Calle Murray, where the sense of community and fun was amazing. I cherish every moment here at WIU—attending events, making connections and having a good time is giving me lifelong memories that I'll always hold dear."

Being involved in many student organizations herself, Gampa recommends students get involved, attend workshops and connect with their peers. She believes WIU is one of the best places to do that.

As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local WIU students to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
