125 Anniversary Celebration: Emily Heagy
September 11, 2024
Editor's Note: This is the next in a series of stories about Western Illinois University students, alumni, and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.
MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University senior Social Work student Emily Heagy didn't have to look far to find her best collegiate option. The Basco, IL, native took advantage of WIU's proximity to home.
"I wanted to get a good education while remaining close to home," Heagy said. "I have enjoyed my time here at Western. I have met a lot of great people."
Heagy said she has made many connections on campus and credits the faculty and fellow students for making the social work program successful.
"I was drawn to the social work program here at Western," Heagy said. "The social work program here is very hands-on, and has provided me with a lot of in-the-field experience. This gives me the opportunity to apply the skills I'm learning in the classroom in real-life situations."
Whether it's a local student or someone coming from further away, Heagy recommends all students should experience the vibrant life on campus.
"As a local student who chose Western I recommend living on campus," Heagy said. "The friendships I have made from living in the dorms have been one of the most important parts to my success at Western. Being on campus also has allowed me to fully immerse myself in college life by joining clubs and organizations."
As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local WIU students to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
