Editor's Note: This is the next in a series of stories about Western Illinois University students, alumni, and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.

MACOMB, IL – Emily Bennett, a student in Elementary Education and Agriculture Education, chose WIU because of the proximity to home, and affordability and she was able to keep up with everything she loved.

"I'm still close to my circle and I get to work on my career path with the people that inspired me to take it in the first place," Bennett said.

Bennett feels her campus is her home. "I really love WIU. I came to WIU with a goal in mind for my future and I've gotten endless opportunities to help reach it. I've found myself and my strengths along the way and I've found people to back me in places I have weaknesses around every corner," Bennett said.æ

Bennett notes the many open doors WIU has provided her in her academic journey.

"Western has so many doors open at all times to different professional development opportunities and events. I've met people from all over the country who want to support us as students as we go out and make names for ourselves," Bennett said.

When asked what advice she would give to prospective WIU students, she responded to take a leap of faith.
"There is no place I'd rather be than right here at WIU," Bennett said. "It's challenging to be in college but there are so many people here fighting to make your dreams a reality."

As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local WIU students to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
