The off-campus police emergency that began yesterday evening has been successfully resolved. We are grateful to report that the situation has concluded safely, and there is no longer any threat to the community.

University operations, including classes and campus services, will resume as normal Friday, Sept. 6 at midnight (12 a.m.). Essential personnel should continue to report to work at their regularly scheduled times and will be provided administrative leave during the emergency closure period, which will end at 11:59 p.m., Sept. 5.

We recognize that incidents like this can be distressing, and we want to remind everyone that our Counseling Center team is available for those who may need support during this time. Many resources are in place to help. In addition, there are local and national hotlines for people who want to talk anonymously or reach out when others are not available. For a list of resources, go to Emergency Resources. If, at any time, you feel you need to talk with a professional, contact the University Counseling Center at (309) 298-2453 or a community agency to set an appointment.

If you don't know exactly what you need, and/or have concerns about someone else, you can complete a Leatherneck Care Report for non-emergencies. WIU staff will reach out to you or the referred person of concern to help identify appropriate resources.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the WIU Office of Public Safety, the Macomb Police Department, McDonough County Sheriff's office, Illinois State Police and all other local and state law enforcement officers for their swift and professional response. We also appreciate the dedication of our faculty and staff who ensured the safety and security of our students throughout the event.

Western Illinois University strives to maintain a safe place for learning, and for our students and employees who live and work here. The Office of Public Safety provides a 24/7 presence on campus.

Finally, a special thank you to all students, faculty, and staff for staying informed and avoiding the area during the emergency. Your cooperation was vital in allowing the authorities to do their job efficiently.

"Our community demonstrated resilience and unity today. We are deeply grateful for the coordinated efforts of law enforcement and the calm, responsible actions of WIU staff. I want to personally thank all law enforcement and University employees for their actions in keeping our students safe and informed during this time," said Interim WIU Interim President Kristi Mindrup.
