Editor's Note: This is the first in a series of stories about Western Illinois University students, alumni, and community members, highlighting their experiences during our 125th anniversary celebration. We will feature 125 individuals from August 2024 to August 2025.

MACOMB, IL - - WIU Nutrition and Dietetics major Ashley Bowles is a senior Macomb native who feels Western is preparing her to pursue a successful career.

"Well, being from Macomb, I knew that Western would be a great option for me since I was able to stay home and be with my family and yet still get the college experience that I wanted to have," Bowles said.

Bowles' journey at WIU has been remarkable.

"I have had an amazing time here at WIU. I have had the chance to be involved in many different student organizations, meet amazing individuals who helped shape my future, and gain an education that is going to help me in my future career!"

She credits her success to the supportive faculty and opportunities at WIU.

"I have had a lot of great professors to help guide me to my undergraduate graduation and to make sure I am ready for grad school! I have applied to WIU for my master's program and I am hoping to continue my education here, to learn how to be successful in student affairs."

When asked for advice for prospective students, Bowles emphasized finding the right environment.

"When looking between colleges, always seek the best environment. I know for myself I wanted a smaller community and to see who was going to offer me the most financial aid and that was WIU! However, always go with your gut instinct, because at the end of the day, you know what's best for yourself."

As we honor 125 years of educational excellence, we invite local WIU students to share their stories and be featured in our series. Contact University Communications at U-Communications@wiu.edu to participate.
