MACOMB, IL – To reduce the amount of waste on campus, Western Illinois University Housing and Dining Services partnered with Goodwill of Macomb (Goodwill Industries of Central Illinois) during residence hall move-out.

Donation bins were placed in each residence hall. The Corbin-Olson lobby had six bins, the Grote Student Center had 10 bins and the Thompson lobby had nine bins for students to drop their unwanted items or items they did not want to take home. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Goodwill would pick up the bins, empty them and bring them back for students to utilize.

In total, 42 bins filled with items such as minifridges, shoes, clothes and more, were picked up and taken to Goodwill. This partnership resulted in a reduction of 5.85 tons of waste sent to landfills.

This partnership has reduced the amount of waste on and around WIU.
