MACOMB, IL - - The Western Illinois University student chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children is in the final stages of fundraising for an advocacy trip to Washington D.C.

The trip to the nation's capital is designed for these students to discuss Special Education policy with members of Congress, highlighting the need for improved conditions for students and teachers.

"We are very close to having the trip fully funded," Hollie Mason, WIU assistant professor of Special Education, said. "Typically, this event is attended by professionals, but the fact that these amazing undergraduate students want to go and the fact they have put in so much work to get the funding means the world to the future of the field of special education."

Mason said the students will be joining hundreds of other special education advocates from across the United States and will be representing the state of Illinois.

The students have been busy preparing for this trip, Mason said, and spent a lot of effort on multiple fundraising events, including a Name that Tune trivia night but need a little more to reach their funding goals ahead of their deadline, Friday, July 12.
