100 WIU MAT Students Complete Residency

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL - - Western Illinois University is proud to announce that 100 students have completed their two-year residency through the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Alternative Licensure program as of this summer.
Some stats to note:


  • 91 individuals are teaching in the district (or have been rehired as of the end of our spring semester) where they did their residency.

  • Four individuals are teaching in different schools in Illinois.

  • Five individuals are no longer teaching in Illinois.


The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) - Alternative Licensure is a two-year residency program where candidates are hired by a school district on a provisional teaching license. Participants receive a beginning teacher salary and take courses over the two years. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will receive an Illinois Professional Educator License in one of the following areas: Visual Arts (Grades PK-12), Early Childhood (Birth-Grade 2), Elementary (Grades 1-6), Middle Grades (Grades 5-8) in Language Arts, General Science, Social Science, or Mathematics, Music (Grades PK-12), Secondary English (Grades 9-12), Secondary History (Grades 9-12), Secondary Mathematics (Grades 9-12), Secondary Science (Grades 9-12) including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth or Space Science, Environmental Science and Special Education (Grades K-Age 22) as a Learning Behavioral Specialist (LBS1).
