MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University hosted a dignitary from Myanmar June 18 to discuss partnership opportunities with WIU.

Sai Khaing Myo Tun, Myanmar's Deputy Education Minister, met with Interim University President Kristi Mindrup and other administrators to discuss opportunities for cooperation and collaboration with WIU. The meeting signals a growing partnership between Myanmar, a southeast Asian country, and WIU.

"The meeting and conversation reinforced the importance and impact of higher education," Mindrup said. "We look forward to seeing this partnership take shape."

Mindrup and Sai Khaing Myo Tun agree that a partnership would create opportunities for both WIU and students from Myanmar.

"This will enhance and promote global experiences and academic opportunities to continue studies and elevate professional confidence," the Deputy Minister said.

Scholarship, academic training in public relations and communication, teacher education, education leadership and professional development opportunities for more Myanmar students to attend and graduate from WIU were among the many topics discussed.

"Our previous experiences with students from Myanmar were so positive, we look forward to moving ahead with opportunities for more students to attend Western Illinois University," College of Fine Arts and Communication Dean William Clow said.
