Just Hired: Emily Ryerson

Just Hired! Through the experiences of local, regional, national and international students, Western Illinois University has some incredible alumni who are changing the world in the workforce. This series will feature students from all over the world who are hired post-graduation.

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL - - Meet Emily Ryerson, a Spring 2024 graduate in Elementary Education, who recently accepted a position at Northside Elementary School in Geneseo.

The interview process for Ryerson was extensive with a 30-minute presentation over four different prompts that she was given ahead of time and several rounds of questions.

"They called me two days later to offer me the teaching position and I gladly accepted," Ryerson said.

Ryerson credited her preparedness for the workforce to the educational opportunities she learned while completing her degree.

"I created a Google classroom in one of my courses at WIU that I attached to my resume when I was applying for positions," Ryerson said. "This helped me in my interview and ultimately get the job because they asked about how I would incorporate technology into the classroom. I needed this degree to get hired where I wanted to be.

"I plan to stay involved with the WIU Alumni Association and continue to keep up with other alumni," Ryerson concluded.
