Three to Interview for WIU General Counsel Position

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL - - Three candidates will interview on the Western Illinois University campus next week for the open position of WIU general counsel.

Candidates include Assistant United States Attorney Kathy Swett (Monday, Feb. 19); Knox County State's Attorney Jeremy Karlin (Thursday, Feb. 22) and Assistant Attorney General Kailin James (Friday, Feb. 23).

Swett has served as assistant United States attorney in the United States Attorney's office, Central District of Illinois, Civil Division, since 2022. Previously, she served as an assistant state's attorney in the Rock Island County State's Attorney's office (2014-22) and senior contract analyst for Cobham Mission Systems Division in Davenport, IA (2011-14).

Swett received her bachelor's degree from Iowa State University and her J.D. from Valparaiso University of School of Law.

Karlin has served as the Knox County state's attorney since 2020. Previously, he was an attorney at Barash & Everett, LLC (2016-20), shareholder at Alcorn Karlin, LLC (2008-16), shareholder Robertson, Wilcox, Alcorn, Karlin & Statham, P.C. (2002-08), and as assistant state's attorney for the Knox County State's Attorney's office (1995-97) all in Galesburg, IL, and an associate attorney at Buchanan and Berry, S.C. in Milwaukee, WI (1994-95).

Karlin earned a bachelor's degree from Syracuse University and a J.D. from Loyola University Chicago School of Law.

James has served as the assistant attorney general since 2023. Previously, she was the deputy prosecutor for the Skagit County Prosecutor's office in Mount Vernon, WA (2023), attorney in private practice at Kailin James Law Office (2012-23), city prosecutor for the city of Burlington, both in Burlington, WA, assistant city attorney for the city of Bellingham in Washington (2011-12) and deputy prosecuting attorney for Island County Prosecuting Attorney's office in Washington (2008-10).

James received her bachelors' degree from Western Illinois University and her J.D. from Northern Illinois University.
