MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University Psychology Department in collaboration with the University Counseling Center (UCC) is launching a new Peer Support Counseling Program (PSCP) in February, supported by the Mental Health Early Action on Campus Act of Illinois.

The program is designed to provide comprehensive support and resources to students facing various challenges.

"Our mission is to provide a safe and private space where students can seek support, share their concerns and access resources. We are driven by the principles of hope, person-centered care, holistic well-being, resilience and equality," WIU Associate Professor of Psychology Kristy Keefe said.

Adding the face-to-face option furthers the resources available to students.

"The Peer to Peer Counseling program is intended to foster student community, human connection, and empathetic understanding for our students," Keefe said.

The program will allow students to have counseling resources while simultaneously providing professional experience to current WIU Psychology students.

The program will be located in the Multicultural Center, Library and Advising Center weekly from 4-7 p.m. Sunday-Wednesday. Appointments are required and can be made on the Peer Support Counseling website at wiu.edu/peer_support/.

The program will allow students to have counseling resources to support their personal growth while also providing professional experience to current Psychology students.
