Butcher Named July Employee of the Month at WIU

MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University IT Support Associate (Desktop Architect) Joe Butcher has been named the Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month for July 2022.

Butcher began working at WIU in August 2014 as an Instructional Technology Systems Manager – Computer Store Operations and moved to the position of Research and Instruction Consultant – uTech, Technology Suppert in July 2016. He transitioned to IT Support Associate (Hardware/Software Support Associate IV) - uTech, Technology Support in February 2019, and was reclassified to his current position by audit in August 2021.

According to Butcher's nominator, he is "one of the best people at WIU, and is always helpful and knowledgeable."

"If he doesn't know the answer to a question, he researches to find the best solution to the problem," said Butcher's nominator. "As one of a small group of Apple tech support, he never makes people feel that they are an inconvenience, even when their issues are challenging and troublesome."

The nominator also credited Butcher for working around their schedule to resolve equipment and software issues quickly, and to avoid workflow interruptions.

In August 2010, the Goldfarbs established an endowment to permanently fund the University's Civil Service Employee of the Month award. The Goldfarb endowment is used to fund a $100 award for the recipient of the Civil Service Employee of the Month, as well as a plaque.

The WIU Foundation provides a $500 stipend for the Civil Service Employee of the Year. Western faculty, staff and administrators, as well as community members, wishing to nominate a civil service employee for the monthly recognition should contact the Civil Service Employees Council (CSEC) at csec-nominations-g@wiu.edu.
