WIU Mourns Death of WIU-Macomb Employee Gregory "Mitch" Carey

MACOMB, IL – Gregory "Mitch" Carey, a building service foreman in Facilities Management at Western Illinois University, passed away Feb. 2 in an auto accident.

"The Western Illinois University community mourns Mitch's passing. We extend our deepest sympathies to Mitch's family, friends and co-workers," said Western Illinois University President Guiyou Huang.

Carey joined WIU in February 2012 as a building service worker. He was promoted to a building service foreman in August 2015.

"We will all remember Mitch as a hard worker who held high standards for himself and his department. He was an employee and a friend we could all count on to be there and do what needed to be done when the situation arose," said Troy Rhoads, executive director of Facilities Management.

"As a foreman, Mitch got any task/job put in front him done quickly and efficiently. He was a direct, no-nonsense leader," said Tammy Klinedinst, supervisor of building services. "Mitch's wife Amanda was his best friend, and he also had a soft spot for dogs and dog people. His Cooper (Lab) and Willy (Basset Hound) were his pride and joy. If someone suffered a fur baby loss, Mitch would be the first one to send his heartfelt condolences. Most of all, Mitch was a friend to his friends."

He is survived by his wife, Amanda; one brother, Steve; and one sister, Becky Withnell.
