Buhs Named December Employee of the Month at WIU
December 1, 2020
MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University IT Technical Associate Jacob Buhs has been named the Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month for December.
Buhs started at WIU in October 2010 as a microcomputer support specialist II in Web Services. In November 2017, he accepted a position in Academic Personnel as a research and instruction consultant for uTech and in February 2019, he transitioned to his current Civil Service position.
According to his nominator, Buhs "always goes above and beyond his assigned duties and is constantly busy."
"While he may be designated to work for University Technology, it doesn't stop him from trying to help out in every area on campus," said his nominator. "He is quick to volunteer and make himself available to students 24/7, making sure they have access to our computers and he makes it extremely user-friendly. He helps some of the students with their homework assignments and projects; he helps explain things in a different way and helps troubleshoot problems, offers solutions and spreads his knowledge to students. He is an expert in the field and helps students reach the next level by being capable of offering real world examples and giving students tangible explanations on why something is important."
In August 2010, the Goldfarbs established an endowment to permanently fund the University's Civil Service Employee of the Month award. The Goldfarb endowment is used to fund a $100 award for the recipient of the Civil Service Employee of the Month, as well as a plaque.
The WIU Foundation provides a $500 stipend for the Civil Service Employee of the Year. Western faculty, staff and administrators, as well as community members, wishing to nominate a civil service employee for the monthly recognition should contact Civil Service Employees Council (CSEC) representative Melinda McFadden at MA-Mcfadden@wiu.edu.
