MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University Finance Professor David DeBoeuf, 58, passed away unexpectedly July 20 in Peoria.

"The Western Illinois University community mourns Dr. DeBoeuf's sudden passing. We extend our sympathies to his family, friends and colleagues," said Western Illinois University Interim President Martin Abraham.

DeBoeuf joined the WIU faculty as an assistant professor in 1995. Prior to receiving his doctorate from Louisiana State University in 1995 and beginning his teaching career at WIU, he started his career in accounting, having worked as a public accountant and subsequently, an internal auditor at Allstate Insurance and multinational corporation General Binding Corporation. During this time, DeBoeuf successfully passed the Certified Public Accountant, Certified Internal Auditor and Associate in Insurance, Accounting and Finance exams.

"Dave loved engaging students in the classroom," said College of Business and Technology Interim Dean Craig Conrad. "His priority was to ensure students understood material and I know he received great joy from his students' successes. He was an excellent instructor and colleague and I will miss him."

He was promoted to associate professor in 1998 and full professor in 2004. DeBoeuf's teaching expertise was in the areas of corporate finance and international financial management. He had served as the faculty advisor for the WIU Investment Group from 1999 to 2011, which was later converted to back-to-back semesters of stock investing courses focused on the students managing actual WIU Foundation money.

"The depth of our loss cannot be measured. The Leatherneck family has lost a treasured member. Our students' wellbeing was his primary motivation. He created innovative investment and finance courses that inspired students to achieve academic excellence. His courses provided students with knowledge that empowered them to control their financial destiny and well-being," said Gregg Woodruff, Department of Accounting and Finance chair. "David was an avid Cardinal's baseball fan, and he had a tremendous sense of humor. His students and colleagues regularly posted Number 1 Cubs Fan signs on his office door to tease him. During my tenure at WIU, Dave stepped up to help a new chair realize success with both the finance and accounting programs. His advice, guidance and friendship will be sorely missed."

He authored articles in several peer-reviewed journals, and presented with his colleagues at national and international conferences. DeBoeuf received his MBA and bachelor's degree in accounting from Illinois State University.

Services are pending.
