MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University Manager of Sports Facilities Alan Arvin has been named the Al and Elaine Goldfarb Civil Service Employee of the Month for December.

Arvin began his career at WIU in September 2007, as an intercollegiate athletics equipment athletics equipment specialist. In July 2012, he was promoted to his current position.

Arvin's nominators said he always greets students, faculty and staff with a big grin and a "can do" attitude.

"His work schedule is not glamorous, but he is always here on time and has the center open on time and with a positive attitude," said his nominators. "He is always maintaining and fixing equipment as necessary. He is also known as the 'tent' guy by putting up the big tent across campus when needed. He takes special interest in his students, often giving them encouraging words to help them through a difficult time. He helps his student workers learn practical skills that can be useful throughout their lives."

In August 2010, the Goldfarbs established an endowment to permanently fund the University's Civil Service Employee of the Month award. The Goldfarb endowment is used to fund a $100 award for the recipient of the Civil Service Employee of the Month, as well as a plaque.

The WIU Foundation provides a $500 stipend for the Civil Service Employee of the Year. Western faculty, staff and administrators, as well as community members, wishing to nominate a civil service employee for the monthly recognition should contact Civil Service Employees Council (CSEC) representative Christine Staley at CD-Staley@wiu.edu.
