Dr. Clontz received an associate of applied science degree in law enforcement from Central Piedmont Community College. After this, he worked for approximately 10 years in both city and county law enforcement and obtained the rank of assistant chief. Dr. Clontz also worked for three years as a manager in private security. During this time, he received both bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in law enforcement. Upon completing the master's degree, he went on to the doctoral program of criminology and criminal justice at Florida State University. Dr. Clontz has published in the areas of geographical mapping, burglary, computer security, human resource management, and law enforcement testing. He is a past president of the Security and Crime Prevention Section of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.
