Winds & Percussion Scholarships
These scholarships may apply to any wind or percussion student
in the School of Music who meets the stated criteria.
THE WALTER H. ELLER MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1980 by Walter Eller, Associate Professor of Physics at WIU from 1920 until his retirement in 1956. Mr. Eller was Director of the WIU Band from 1920-1942 and composed the words and music for the WIU Fight Song "We Are Marching On". This scholarship is to be presented annually to a junior member of the WIU Band. The recipient must have one of the top 3 GPA's from all the applicants. Amount awarded is $500 annually.
THE DR. A. OREN GOULD SCHOLARSHIP
This account was established in 1982 by family and friends of Dr. A Oren Gould to honor his memory and to encourage outstanding instrumental music education students. Dr. Gould taught at WIU from 1948-1974 in both WIU Lab School of WIU Music Department. This award is made to a junior music major in instrumental music education. Recipient must have at least a 2.5 GPA (3.0 in music). Amount varies.
THE ROSCOE G. LINDER BAND SCHOLARSHIP
This account was established in 1983 after Dr. Roscoe G. Linder made donations towards this endowment fund. Recipient should be at least a 2nd year band member in good standing and should be able to demonstrate dependability, leadership qualities and service to the School of Music. Recipient music have at least a 3.0 GPA, show potential for growth as a private instructor, band director, performer, or composer, and show some achievement and excellence in some area of instrumental music. Amount varies.
THE HUGO MAGLIOCCO TROMBONE SCHOLARSHIP
Upon retirement after a 36-year career, WIU's first trombone instructor, Dr. Hugo Magliocco, established this scholarship through the WIU Foundation. The recipient(s) of this award must be an international student or an African American/Hispanic American student, be a new student to WIU, and must have earned and continue to maintain a talent service award through the School of Music. The scholarship is renewable for up to 8 continuous semesters as long as the student remains a full-time and continues to study trombone. The student must maintain a GPA of 3.0 in music (excluding all ensemble grades), and an overall 2.5 GPA. Amount varies.
TOM WOOD CLARINET SCHOLARSHIP
The Tom Wood Scholarship was established in 1992 by family and friends in memory of Tom Wood, a prominent Illinois jazz clarinetist. Recipients must be music performance or music education major with clarinet as their primary instrument and demonstrate significant musical talent. Financial need is considered. Continued growth and participation in the School of Music as a major will be part of the criteria for renewability. Amount Varies.
CLAIRE AND HAZEL FAUST HORN SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 2011 by Randall and Sharon Faust in memory of his parents, Claire and Hazel Faust. Dr. Faust's father was a musician and band director and his mother a local piano teacher. Together, they instilled in Randall a love for music and provided the direction that led Randall to the Horn (formerly known as the French Horn). Recipients must be a returning music major, enrolled in horn lessons, have at least a 3.0 GPA, actively participate in the chamber music ensembles, and support the WIU Horn Festival outreach. Award amounts to $1000 per year.
RICHARD CHEADLE PERCUSSION SCHOLARSHIP
The Richard Cheadle Percussion Scholarship was established Feb 2015 to provide an annual award to a WIU percussion student in honor of Dr. Cheadle. Students must be a percussion music major and be active in both steel band and concert venues. Amount varies.
