About the Artist

I was born and raised on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, but now reside in the Midwest where I have lived and worked since 1998. I am currently a Professor of Art in the Department of Art at Western Illinois University and live in Macomb, Illinois with my wife Laura and our three children. I initially joined the WIU Department of Art in 2002. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Drawing from William Carey College in Gulfport, Mississippi in 1998 and my Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 2001.

The bulk of my current studio work references the rehabilitation of the Mississippi Gulf Coast region following the onslaught of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. My hometown of Biloxi, Mississippi was one of the many towns along the Gulf Coast that took a direct hit from the storm. In the days and weeks following Katrina, much of the devastation inflicted upon the Mississippi coast became heavily ignored by the media due in part to the catastrophic levee breaks in New Orleans. Many Mississippi residents feel as though their stories were grossly ignored and even forgotten completely by the public and media. The Mississippi Gulf Coast has undoubtedly been changed forever, but it is far from dead. It is my hope to create art that will foster continued awareness and encourage support for the place in which I still call home.
