Common Core Mathematics: Recognizing and Utilizing Structure

Keynote Speakers
Dr. Robert Berry, NTCM President-Elect
- Robert Berry is an Associate Professor at the University of Virginia, and is the current NCTM President-Elect. A former public middle school mathematics teacher in both Virginia and North Carolina, he teaches mathematics methods courses for pre-service teachers as well as for in-service teachers seeking a mathematics specialist endorsement. He has expertise in equity issues in mathematics education, as well as classroom observation and incorporating engineering principles into mathematics education. Dr. Berry will make a special presentation for the campus community on April 12 and be our opening speaker at the conference. Full bio here. Presentation descriptions here.
- On Thursday, 4/12/18, at 3:30 p.m. in Morgan Hall 109, Dr. Berry will make a special presentation on the WIU campus, titled, #blackkidsdomath: Discussing Black Boys who are Successful with School Mathematics. POSTER.
- Dr. Berry will give the opening address at our conference Friday morning titled, Catalyzing Change: Identity, Agency, Positionality and Equitable Instructional Practices
Reggie Duncan, ICTM Excellence Award Winner
- Reggie Duncan is a 5th grade mathematics and science teacher at Wingate Elementary School in Shiloh, Illinois. He is the 2016 ICTM Excellence in Elementary Mathematics award winner, as well as a member of the ICTM Board of Directors; he was also a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching finalist in 2016. He has worked on the Math Model Resource Project Team to facilitate educators’ transition to the New Illinois Learning Standards, as well as serving as an Area Teacher Leader for the I-STEM project. Reggie Duncan will have two presentations at our conference.
- Breakout session: Unraveling Problem Solving Structure (targeted for K-8 teachers)
- Closing address: Structure is All Around Us: Composing and Decomposing Fractions and Hip-Hop!?!

Parking
Participants can park in the Horrabin Hall lot (# 19 on the attached map, for faculty/staff); we've let Parking Services know that you will be coming to the conference that day, and they said that is fine, they won't be ticketing. If you arrive and the Horrabin Hall lot is full, you can try the Currens Hall lot (# 20 on the map).
