The Power of Visualization in Mathematics
Keynote Speaker: Nathan Carter
Dr. Carter is an Associate Professor at Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts, having received his Ph.D. in mathematics from Indiana University in 2004. His book Visual Group Theory is an engaging introduction to abstract algebra that presents a course in group theory from a purely visual perspective, assuming of its reader only a high school mathematics background. This book received the 2012 Beckenbach Book Prize from the Mathematical Association of America, and has also received praise from the New York Times. More broadly, Nathan uses computer science and software development to advance mathematics and mathematics education. He has published a variety of open source mathematics software, and is currently working on a textbook concerning the mathematics of computer graphics.
Ms. Felt is an 8th grade mathematics teacher in the Sherrard Community Unit School District, where she is the mathematics department chair for Sherrard Junior/Senior High School; she is also an Adjunct Associate Faculty member at the Quad Cities campus of Western Illinois University. Kathy has been actively involved with the CCSSM and PARCC and is currently a member of the Illinois Educator Cadre working with PARCC; additionally, she was a participant in the PARCC Teacher Voices Presentation in Washington DC in the summer of 2013. Kathy has served on the ICTM board as Director for Grades 5-8 and as Board Chair, and has also served on several committees for the Illinois State Board of Education. She has been a regular presenter at the annual ICTM conference and at our own WIU Math Teachers' Conference.
