Dr.
Keith Devlin Consulting Professor at the Department of Mathematics of Stanford University http://www.stanford.edu/~kdevlin/ Title of talk: Dr. Devlin is a co-founder and Executive Director of the Stanford University's H-STAR institute, a Consulting Professor in the Department of Mathematics, a co-founder of the Stanford Media X research network, and a Senior Researcher at CSLI. He is a World Economic Forum Fellow and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His current research is focused on the use of different media to teach and communicate mathematics to diverse audiences. He also works on the design of information/reasoning systems for intelligence analysis. Other research interests include: theory of information, models of reasoning, applications of mathematical techniques in the study of communication, and mathematical cognition. Dr. Devlin has written 26 books and over 80 published research articles. He was recipient of the Pythagoras Prize, the Peano Prize, the Carl Sagan Award, and the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics Communications Award. Closing Speaker: Ms. Susan Morrison |
Ms. Susan Morrison, the Illinois Deputy
State Superintendent of Education, will be our closing speaker this
year. Susie has worked in the education field in Illinois for
more than 30 years. She has been a teacher, an administrator in a
K-12 district and has worked as the Director at the state office of the
North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School
Improvement, located at the University of Illinois.
Het talk, “Shaping the Future of Illinois Education”, will focus on the latest developments in the state and national standards and how they may impact Illinois teachers, students, expectations and assessments. The American Diploma Project and Common Core Standards movement are poised to change the way we teach and learn mathematics and Mrs. Morrison will be able to address these issues as she discusses the future of education here in Illinois.
