Academic Advising

Complementary Advising

Academic advisors serving in an area of special interest (athletics, honors, ROTC, study abroad) ensure that students are aware of the policies, requirements, and pursuits of the respective area. They also work in partnership with first year and major advisors to integrate the students’ special interests with their degree plan.

Athletics

Athletics academic support staff monitor and evaluate the academic performance of all student-athletes at Western Illinois University, ensuring student-athletes meet the NCAA progress toward degree regulations crucial to their NCAA eligibility. Athletic Academic Services provides tutoring services for student-athletes, as well as development and enhancement programming, personal development, career development, leadership development and community service opportunities that are required by the NCAA.

Centennial Honors College

Academic Honors Advisors recruit and admit eligible students to the Centennial Honors College, help students in all majors develop their honors curriculum plan, and review students’ progress regarding course and GPA requirements. They also keep students informed about Honors scholarships, events, and opportunities for involvement in organizations and activities. During meetings, advisors and students discuss experiences with Honors courses, projects, and housing, as well as student concerns with academic and campus life. Advisors also talk to upper class students about Honors designations, Convocation, and career goals.

ROTC

Military Science (ROTC)

During ROTC advising meetings, available ROTC classes are reviewed with the student, as well as the student’s academic and military standing. Leadership, training, and scholarship opportunities offered by ROTC are also discussed. The advisor will review the contractual requirements of the student upon graduating and earning their commission as a 2LT in the Army. As a Recruitment Operations Officer, the ROTC advisor also oversees the recruitment of new students into the ROTC programs.

Study Abroad

The Study Abroad advisor provides students with an overview of the types of programs available; helps them navigate the Study Abroad website to learn more about programs; discusses how Financial Aid and Study Abroad work together; and offers program suggestions based on a student’s academics, country of interest, etc.  As students move through the process of being interested, to studying abroad, and then returning to WIU, Study Abroad and Outreach guides them along the way.
