Professor Rehling earned his bachelor's degree 1974 and juris doctorate in 1977. Both degrees where awarded from DePaul University. He has been teaching at Western since 1996, where his focus is law. Professor Rehling teaches courses in criminal law, criminal procedure, and evidence.

Prior to joining the faculty at WIU, Professor Rehling spent 13 years with the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. While there, he worked in the juvenile court as both a courtroom attorney and the supervisor. He also worked in felony review, grand jury, preliminary hearing courts, and the felony trial courts. He has experience in private legal practice that includes both criminal and juvenile law. Professor Rehling is an instructor in juvenile police officer certification classes.
